Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Filed under: General — Lady Dobry @ 10:45 am

When the first Harry Potter craze happened years ago I did not understand the hype ( plus as a student at the time, did not have many chances of reading for enjoyment) but one day we (Madhujit and I) sat down and watched the first movie. At this point, I was hooked… and everyone knows that the book is always better then the movie. So at this point I went out and bought the first 3 books ( that were available at the time) and sat down and read them all in a day. Still, many people ask – why the harry potter series… there are a lot of decent children’s books series with a fantasy base ( Check out Tamora Pierce’s series and Patricia C. Wrede series – though these are more for the female readers). Harry Potter appeals to both the young and the old. It has a storyline of the classic type fairy tale ( we hope eventually Harry will end up with his “happy ever after” ) with the awesome and strange dangers but with real emotions thrown in. So, of course, the new Harry Potter book was released yesterday and I purchased it first thing in the morning…
I am again amazed with the way JK Rowlings pulls the reader in and creates the environment that you can see. It is well written, but for me, the end made me quite sad. ( I do not want to give anything away for the people still reading). As Madhujit and I were talking as I travelled to work, he made a great point. Without killing the character off, Harry would not have a chance to mature into his power to excel because the character would always be there known as the best.
Well, that is about all I would like to comment on the book now so I do not spoil it – but if you have not tried the harry potter books, I suggest starting with book 1 and see if you too, catch the harry potter bug.
