Well, there has been some recent research that suggests that unexplained bone or muscle pain might be due to a vitamin D deficiency. Because many adults do not get the proper amount of vitamin D in their lifetime, the levels in the body will become low and this will lead to a softening of the bones, or osteomalacia. Even before the softening happens, it is possible that many people feel muscle pain.
Vitamin D comes from the body getting sun, and now, especially, when most people do not go outside, or use very strong sunscreen or have darker complexions, this causes inadequate sun exposure to produce enough vitamin D. There are many younger people that have low levels, so it is just not the older population…. this can be supplemented with diet, but usually it is not properly supplemented. You can drink Vitamin D fortified milk, which is only about 100International Units per cup, while the recommendation is atleast 200IU per day for the people 19 to 50 and the requirements go up with age. What does vitamin D do for us? Vitamin D is a hormone that helps regulate the health of more than 30 different tissues, from the brain to the prostate. It also has a role in regulating cell growth, the immune system and blood pressure, and in the production of insulin, brain chemicals and bone. Deficiencies are thought to cause other health issues and such, but there is no definite research….
Unfortunately in our day and age, many people do not drink milk, they spend long hours indoor, and they protect themselves from the sun ( which is a good thing to protect from different types of skin cancers). We can’t win, but we can try to balance our lives… and remember the saying, milk does the body good….
On a personal note, Felicity was upset that I did not write of her visit a few weeks ago and I apologize, that was a busy weekend and I did not get the chance to write… She came over and I made a good and experimental dinner and we watched a movie…
I am now done at Flower and will work at Rite Aid for my spring break and move onto St. Charles. Katie, Jessy and her friend, Roxy spent the night last night– I told Jessy it was ok, I did not want her driving late at night…. we are going to go out to breakfast in a few minutes…
Daisy is doing better… she is a mass of energy and I am working hard at developing routines to help dissipate the energy levels, like Luckey the de-energizer…lolol.
In the past I did some projects on Levitra and the whole marketing aspect of this type of drug interests me. Viagra created themselves as the “one” to get, and they are continuing to try to get more attention. There is new research out there that is trying to say whether Viagra can work for women. It can, believe it or not. The way it works is the drug blocks phosphodiesterase 5, which in women, when this happens the blood flow to the vagina is enhanced. The only thing to keep in mind is it is not going to work with all women– the women have to have desire, plus the correct balance of estradiol and testosterone.
Back to the discussion about marketing. Cialis has come out as the “weekend warrior drug”. But to be honest with you, doctors are not responsive to this advertisement. Doctors are still going with Viagra most of the time because there is more clinicial data and additionally, Viagra has taken the majority of the marketshare while Levitra and Cialis were just ideas. If Viagra continues to find uses for the drug and get these approved by the FDA, Levitra and Cialis will probably get no where in the market share. Funny things happen when you discover different side effects to investigational drugs– Viagra was for the heart before they discovered the “breakthrough” side effect.
Now lets make this a complete posting by bringing up Ephedra…. lolol… this is one way to increase my hits…
As most people know, Ephedra ( aka ma huang) is a dangerous drug that people use for weight loss. Many people can contribute their death to the use of Ephedra and the side effects that it causes. Finally, the FDA will ban Ephedra — they are able to do this using the DSHEA law– the FDA had to prove that the supplement, Ephedra, causes harm so they can have these supplements removed from the market.
The people making money from these products are not too happy with this and are introducing “new” ephedra replacements– they are different because they contain a different supplement, synephrine, and is still dangerous….
On a personal note, Daisy is still not wanting to listen. I must say, she is a stubborn puppy, but she is still adorable. Daisy just loves to play with Madhujit’s dog, Luckey… Daisy will take toys directly out of Luckey’s mouth, and run around, trying to get luckey to chase her….
Well… I need to finish lunch and head back to flower…..
Not much is going on. Madhujit came over last night and we watched the dogs play. I almost had Daisy for a month now… she is set to get her next set of puppy shots on thursday. I am no longer going to use Reynold Rd. Animal Hospital, because Daisy has continued to see Total PetCare… I am not sure if I am going to be happy with the change in vets, but I am going to give them a try. The bad thing is that my busia will not know where to take Daisy if necessary, so I will have to show her some day.
I came across a really awesome site for pharmacists, it is http://www.globalrph.com/ . I would recommend it — I needed to use it for a pharmacokinetics problem I came across this morning.
These computers give me a headache at Flower… The monitor is horrible and fuzzy and even if I play with the settings, nothing will sharpen the picture… it is just a old monitor that already lost it’s last leg and is waiting to be put out of it’s misery. The computer’s fan is also so load, it makes it difficult to sit in front of these computers. I thank God that my computer is decent and I have a lovely flat panel monitor..lolol…
I was making copies earlier this morning and was reading the message board while I was waiting, and came across a saying that mentioned different perspectives — a bucket of water is an ocean for an ant, a cool drink for elephant, etc… I really can’t remember it word for word, but it is true that situations change based on how we look at it… this makes me think that our medical practice in the us is doing something right, because we bring in specialists that can look at a situation from their own perspectives.
I came across the term “hypercapnic respiratory acidosis” and I was curious what made this different from a regular acidosis. It is a type II Respiratory Failure (Hypercapnic / Hypoxemic Respiratory Failure ) and it is defined as a failure of the lungs to maintain ventilation as evidenced by a PaCO2 > 50 mm Hg. Since alveolar CO2 is elevated O2 must be displaced from the alveoli. This will lead to arterial hypoxemia even in the absence of other derangements in pulmonary function. Often ventilation/perfusion (V/Q) mismatch and/or shunt coexists that aggravates the hypoxemia. The etiology of Type II failure is much more varied and is more commonly encountered clinically. The presence of metabolic compensation determines the chronicity of respiratory failure. So basically it is respiratory acidosis that occurs when the lungs cannot remove all of the carbon dioxide (a normal by-product of metabolism) produced by the body. This causes a disturbance of the acid-base balance in which body fluids become excessively acidic. Therefore it is just another name for respiratory acidosis.
Well… now that I finished discovering what that was, my day is decently well, though I still feel under the weather. My mom went to California the previous week and she bought me some beautiful hair clips. They are cheaper in california than they are in toledo. Toledo will charge about $50 a clip while my mom got me 2 for 30… My hair is really long, so I like having pretty clips to keep my hair out of my face. Well… I should go and eat lunch so I can go back to flower hospital….
